How to do your own marketing in 5 hours a week
You don't have a marketing problem โ you have a "marketing happens whenever I remember" problem. Here's the weekly operating rhythm that makes five focused hours outperform an agency retainer you can't afford anyway.
The businesses that win at DIY marketing aren't more creative โ they're more scheduled. Marketing that lives in the gaps of your week always loses to the urgent. Marketing that owns five recurring calendar blocks compounds. Here's the split, hour by hour. It assumes you've done a one-page plan first โ if you haven't, do that this week instead; it's the same five hours better spent.
Monday ยท 1 hour โ Make the week's content
One idea, executed properly. Pick a question a customer asked you last week and answer it in your channel's format โ a post, a short video, an email. Then repurpose: the same idea becomes a Google Business update, an Instagram caption, and a paragraph in this month's newsletter. One idea, four assets, one hour. (A system like the 90-Day Content Engine makes this mechanical โ the idea backlog is pre-built.)
Tuesday ยท 30 min โ Tend the machine
Reply to every comment, review, and DM. Ask one happy customer from last week for a review โ a two-line text ("It was great working with you โ would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? Link here.") triples review rates versus hoping. Reviews are the highest-leverage 30 minutes in local marketing.
Wednesday ยท 1 hour โ Own your audience
Email. Send your list something useful (repurpose Monday's idea), or if your list is tiny, spend the hour growing it: improve your lead magnet, add the signup to your invoice footer, your email signature, your counter. The email list is the only audience you own โ every social platform is rented land.
Thursday ยท 1.5 hours โ The quarter project
This is the block that separates operators from posters. Work on one of your quarter's three priorities: rebuilding the homepage headline, setting up the welcome email, testing a $10/day ad. Ninety minutes weekly finishes roughly one meaningful project a month โ twelve a year, which is more than most funded competitors ship.
Friday ยท 30 min โ Look at the numbers
Open your five numbers (leads, cost per customer, list size, conversion, marketing revenue). Write one sentence: what worked this week, what didn't, what changes Monday. Four sentences a month is a marketing review most agencies would bill for.
What's deliberately missing
New channels. Trend-chasing. Redesigning the logo. The five-hour system works because of what it excludes โ it's two channels, one idea a week, and one project at a time, reviewed every Friday. Boring, repeatable, and quietly lethal after six months.
